Art therapists may be tempted to guide group process through directives, yet experts encourage growth through unplanned and spontaneous interactions. In the push for evidence-based practices and funding shortages, when are nondirective approaches more appropriate than directive? How can we provide the structure and freedom necessary for therapeutic growth?

Dr. Einat Metzl
Associate Professor, Loyola Marymount University
Einat Metzl, PHD, LMFT, ATR-BC is a licensed marital and family therapist (MFT) and a registered art therapist (ATR). She is a therapist in private practice and an associate professor at Loyola Marymount University’s graduate Marital Family Therapy / Art Therapy program. Einat is committed to expanding art therapy research and bridging our current paradigms of art therapy with related discipline. Her previous work explored the interwoven and collective knowledge of wellness connected to Art therapy, sex therapy, disaster mental health, resilience, play therapy, inter generational trauma, leadership and diversity, couples' therapy, and coping with loss.

Malissa Morrell
Director of Expressive Arts, La Europa Academy
Malissa Morrell, LMFT, ATR-BC, ATCS is a Registered Art Therapist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist living and working in Salt Lake City. In addition to private practice, she is currently the Director of Expressive Arts at La Europa Academy and the Founder/Owner of The Therapy Studio SLC. Malissa is a current member of the ACATE Council and enjoys working toward the future of art therapy!
