N/NY-MS-97 - Leaving a Legacy: Face Painting, Molds, and Memories in Pediatric Art Therapy

This presentation explores how art therapy was utilized in pediatric palliative care to support a 19-year old with cystic fibrosis and end stage lung failure. From life-size sculptures of her hands to face painting with medical staff, ways that various mediums helped the patient leave her legacy will be highlighted.

Ashley Wood, MA, ATR-BC, CIMI is an artist, Board Certified Art Therapist, and Certified Infant Massage Instructor. She has started and developed the Art Therapy Program at Texas Children's Hospital, where she currently serves patients within Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Palliative Care. Ashley has worked extensively with individuals to address issues related to acute and chronic illness, developmental disabilities, family bonding, grief and bereavement, and trauma. Her approach to art therapy is person-centered and strength-based, and she is passionate about helping children and families discover unique ways of using art to express, cope, and heal during their healthcare experience. She has presented locally and nationally as well as published work on the benefit of art as a communicative tool for children.
