0326 – Spouse and Caregiver to a Combat-Wounded Veteran: A Heuristic Study

Description

Presentation will discuss art-based, heuristic study exploring the lived experience of being a spouse and caregiver to a combat-wounded veteran and an art therapy student. Attendees will learn about importance of self-awareness, clinical concerns and considerations when providing art therapy or counseling to spouses/partners who are caregivers.

Learning Objectives
    1. Identify three clinical concerns of spouses/partners who are caregivers to combat wounded veterans.
    2. Name two ways exploration of the self and building self-awareness can inform professional development and ethical practice of art therapists and counselors in training.
    3. Learn and identify three considerations when providing art therapy or counseling to spouses/partners who are caregivers for their combat wounded service member.

    Dr. Cheryl Shiflett

    Cheryl Shiflett, PhD, LPC, ATR-BC is a registered, board-certified art therapist and licensed professional counselor. She provides clinical supervision in the Graduate Art Therapy and Counseling Program and operates a private practice. She graduated with a BS and MS in Psychology from Old Dominion University, a MS in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School, and a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Research interests include pedagogy and clinical supervision.

    Alisa Simmons

    Art Therapist, Options for South Oregon

    Alisa Marie Stuckert Simmons is an Art Therapist living in Grants Pass, OR. She has experience working as an Art Therapist with all ages and is currently working with adolescents and their families. Alisa received her Masters of Art Therapy and Counseling in 2017 at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA. She presented her work 'Exploring the Lived Experience of Being a Spouse and Caregiver to a Combat-Wounded Veteran and an Art Therapy Student: An Art-Based, Heuristic Study' at the 2017 AATA Conference. She is currently pursuing LPC and ATR-BC credentialing.
