NY-MC-280 - Art Therapy and Diagnostic Assessments for Asylum Seekers: A Call to Action

The immigration crisis has reached an unprecedented level. Art therapists can help migrants by giving a voice to children whose perspective is lost through traditional assessment. After completing 60 psychological reports for asylum seekers I provide an overview of legal visas, integrating art into evaluations, cultural considerations and resources.

Joann Lundberg is a bilingual Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Art Therapist at NW Counseling Associates, LLC. She also collaborates with immigration law firms, conducting diagnostic assessments for refugees facing deportation. Joann has extensive experience working with Latinos in medical settings as a Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) in Spanish for eight years, for the non-profit sector in Cusco, Peru, and in an art gallery in Costa Rica. Joann studied Spanish at Linfield College, the University of Costa Rica, San Jose, and the Cultural Institute of Oaxaca, Mexico.
